Installing the iPhone and iPad App, Syncing Calendar and Contacts

Print

With the Nextcloud app you can reach your files from an iPhone or iPad and upload your photos and videos to Nextcloud. Your calendar and contacts can be synced with the iPhone's own Calendar and Contacts apps; no extra app is needed for that.

Installing the app

Search the App Store for Nextcloud (developer: Nextcloud GmbH, free) and install it. The app requires iOS and iPadOS 17 or later.

Adding your account

  1. When the app opens, enter your Nextcloud address; it is the same address you use in the browser (example: https://bulut.sirketiniz.com). Then click the login button.
  2. The Nextcloud login page opens in your browser. If it does not, you can open it with the button in the app.
  3. Log in with your username and password. If two-factor authentication is on, enter the verification code as well.
  4. You are asked to give the app access; click Grant access and return to the app.

With this method your password is not stored in the app; the app receives a password for this device only. If you lose the device, you can remove its access from the device list on the Settings > Security page in Nextcloud.

Using the app

  • You can browse your files by folder, open them and share them in the app.
  • In the app settings you can turn on automatic upload of your photos and videos to Nextcloud, which helps free up space on your phone.
  • You can mark files you want to reach without an internet connection as available offline.
  • You can lock the app with a passcode or Face ID.

Creating an app password

For programs that connect directly, such as calendar and contact sync, we recommend using an app password for this device instead of your Nextcloud password; it is required if two-factor authentication is on for your account. Log in to Nextcloud in the browser, open Settings from your profile icon at the top right and go to Security. Under the list of devices and sessions, enter your device as the app name (example: iPhone) and create a new app password. Note the username and password shown; the password is displayed only once, on this screen. When you no longer use the device, you can remove its access from the same list.

Syncing your calendar

  1. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Calendar > Calendar Accounts > Add Account, choose Other as the account type and then Add CalDAV Account.
  2. In Server, enter your Nextcloud address without https:// (example: bulut.sirketiniz.com).
  3. In User Name and Password, enter the username and password shown when you created the app password, then tap Next.
  4. If the account cannot be verified, enter the server address as bulut.sirketiniz.com/remote.php/dav/principals/users/username/ under the account's Advanced Settings, and check that SSL is on and the port is 443.

Syncing your contacts

Follow the same steps under Settings > Apps > Contacts > Contacts Accounts > Add Account > Other > Add CardDAV Account. The server, username and password are the same as for the calendar.

Menu names may differ slightly between iOS versions. The connection must always be encrypted (SSL).
