How to Change the Windows Administrator Password
You can change the Administrator account password on your Windows server from the command line or from the Local Users and Groups screen. The steps are the same on Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025.
From the command line
- Type cmd in the Start menu, right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
net user Administrator *
The asterisk makes the command prompt for the new password. Type it twice; it is not displayed as you type. We recommend this instead of typing the password in the command itself, so the password does not stay in the command history.
From Local Users and Groups
- Open the Run window with Windows key + R, type lusrmgr.msc and press Enter.
- In the Users folder, right-click Administrator and choose Set Password.
- Confirm the warning, type the new password twice and save.
Important
- Use the new password the next time you connect with Remote Desktop, and update the old password saved on your computer as well.
- Choose a strong password: at least 12 characters with upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Servers open to Remote Desktop face constant password-guessing attacks.
- If you forgot your password and cannot connect to the server, you can open a support ticket from your client area.
